$10 is where you start, do well for a few months and you can be making $20 no problem.
That kinda sorta makes me wanna barf. I work in R&D, the products we make are responsible for people's lives, and I don't even make that much.
Also, you definitely need insurance. Imagine you get hit by a car and are laid up in the hospital for a month. And that it was a hit & run, so the bastard never pays... [/rant]
Living with an injury is bad enough when you ARE getting proper medical care. You really don't want to live with it if you aren't.
Of course, not everything is covered by your insurance...I've been dealing with a jaw injury (car crash, no airbag, defective seat belt) for over 10 years. The cost has run above $25k. NOT fun. Wish insurance had covered more than they did. [/sob story]
So go for the union job if it's got better coverage. _________________ "A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have." -Pres. Ford

Part of it is this is Washington. Minimum wage is something like $8.17 an hour, and they raise it every year. Finding a job that pays $9.00 an hour or better is not hard, as long as you don't bore easily. _________________ This post brought to you by Petty Revenge: When not being a jerk just won't do.

And, alas, that doesn't change the fact that your janitors make more than people with doctorates here (not me).
But then again, I don't have to pay state taxes. _________________ "A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have." -Pres. Ford

Yeah, keep in mind WA has the highest sales tax in the nation, and everything is taxed (even some food is taxed). I've never seen anywhere in the US where gas is expensive as it is here; between the state-run monopoly on liquor stores and the additional taxes they throw on there, it's actually cheaper to brew your own. When someone tried to pass an initiative to require all tax increases to be put to a public vote, it was declared unconstitutional. _________________ This post brought to you by Petty Revenge: When not being a jerk just won't do.

The reasoning was it covered two things, all tax increases requiring a public vote, and $30 car tabs. I don't why they can't do that in initiatives when the legislature does that left and right. _________________ This post brought to you by Petty Revenge: When not being a jerk just won't do.

I dunno about a ton of money. Good money, sure, but it's not like you'll see many construction workers pushin beamers any time soon. Lots of people make pretty good money doing manual labor, until their bodies break down and they can't keep it up and have no training for anything else.

When I was 15 I was a good janitor.. clean 110 year machines with varsol and replaced chain to get them working.. part of the job was cleaning out a room that still had a calendar from 1967 on the wall, not sure why we had to, but I imagine we were trying to kill time at the end of the summer shutdown...
