I took my car in to get a shake taken care of in the front end and the guy gave me a laundry list of stuff that really needed fixed.
Transmission needs rebuilt, new CV joints, brakes, tires and front wheel bearings. All this will probably come to about $3k or more. So I just decided to buy a new car, but I dont know what I want to buy.

Well that all depends on what you care for. Do you like trucks, whats your spending limit, do you want something pretty or just something that will run. _________________ "No snowflake in an avalanche ever feels responsible." --George Burn

First, is this mechanic trustworthy?
Does the transmission in the type of car you have actually have documentable problems...?
A shake could be something as simple as needing an alignment (roughly $60 for a four wheel alignment).
Tires you can buy used, or hell, new at $300 a set, CV joints run about $300 a side to rebuild (if they are getting BAD you'll hear a thunk-thunk-thunk noise as you go around a corner), so $600, and brakes and wheel bearings, E-A-S-Y to do, buy the Chilton's or Haynes manual maybe... parts will run you maybe $200 for the bearings and brakes (rotors and pads).
Does this mechanic have a vested interest in getting you into a "new" car, i.e. does he work for a service department or at a car dealership?
What kind of car is it, how old, and what kind of condition aside from ALL these horrible problems he's found?
Plus, should you really ditch this car for something else that WILL develop all these same problems over time (especially if you stick with front wheel drive). _________________

Yeah, its a 97 Civic. The tranny has has issues since I got the thing about two years ago. The wheel bearings dont need to be replaced right now, they are just kinda starting to go, the tranny could blow tomorrow or last another three years before it really has any problems. And thankfully the cv joints are shot, but no damage to the axels yet. I bought it after I wrecked my Audi TT because I wanted something to get me by for awhile and not have a car payment. It has served its purpose. And now I will use it for a trade in. I should probably get a decent price for it since it does get 40 mpg. Thats about its only redeeming factor.

Im actually looking at an Acura RSX or a VW GTI, both get a little over 30mpg. But the VW has a turbo! I actually have some experience working on the VW 1.8T motor, where as the Acura K20 I have never touched, though I assume its pretty simple to work on much like the older B series, B16 and B18, that Honda/Acura used before the switched to the newer engines.

yeah, that ain't prying...
Volkswagen are not known for their reliability, they are, however known for their electrical gremlins. Also their service department at the dealership can be, how do I put this lightly, raging assholes. Just sayin'. If you look for a three year old Acura, I'd say go for it, there's not any reason to take the hit in depreciation by buying new. _________________

Actually both the Rabbit and the Acura are withing a few hundered of eachother. And Im friends with the lead tech at the vw dealership I would be going to. In fact he did work for me when I owned my Audi TT. I dunno. I gotta do a little budget work. Because if I buy a car right now its going to take all the cash I have saved up and leave me with about $100 to get me through till payday. So I dunno. Im going to go look at the Acura tomorrow and take it for a drive. Im pretty familiar with how the RSX drives cause a freind of mine has one, which is why it is a serious consideration. But I do love me some German cars.

I have to call "old issues" on this one.
I love my VW dealership and the techs over there.
62,000 miles and only oil changes. The car is flawless. Second one I've had, the last one was leased and went away at 60,000 and it too was flawless.
Yes, the old ones.....not so much. All cars have issues but no longer is it a broad sweeping issue with VW that it used to be.
That said, the Acura is 'potentially' a more solid car long term but you will have to ask me in another 40,000 when I start to consider getting rid of mine for a 1 series.

Now those are nice, but I have yet to hear anything good or bad about them, and right now anything from BMW is out of my price range. Or at least the ones I could afford are going to have issues.
If you want a turbo...... Mazdaspeed3. I get 30mpg in mine all the time (as long as i'm off the loud pedal). You had a TT previously so i'm going to go ahead and assume you know a thing or two about performance cars. Other than the Acura being bulletproof as far as reliability, the Mazda would walk all over it in every other category. Oh, and a used RSX is going to be cheaper. _________________ I want to go out of this life the same way I came in. Screaming at the top of my lungs and covered in someone else's blood.

I don't know what you do exactly, but if you wanna drive a beemer for cheap, you should consider applying at the BMW headquarters out in Dublin. They have some AWESOME deals for employee leases (I've heard somewhere in the vicinity of $200/month for a lower-end 3-series, and that includes insurance). I think they mostly deal with the finance end at that building. _________________ "A government big enough to give you everything you want is strong enough to take everything you have." -Pres. Ford
