I just got The Bedlam In Goliath, which completes my Mars Volta collection.
I am floored by it, along with everything else they've done.
I can't believe this two-man bastion of utter brilliance (Cedric Bixler-Zavala and Omar Rodriguez-Lopez) has been able to produce four incredible albums since 2003 without a single misstep. It's challenging, euphoric, and addicting music. I think it's safe to say that they're the most stylistically brilliant band since Led Zeppelin.
Check it out if you haven't heard them. It's transcendent, cerebral, completely amazing music.
(Haha, and while I'm writing this, I'm listening to their song "Wax Simulacra" really loudly...my dad just walked into my room and asked "What the hell is this?!?!?!")

Deloused was fantastic.
Francis the Mute was... Not fantastic. Not bad, but not fantastic.
I've been disappointed with everything since... It's not that they've become "formulaic" in a greater, overall musical sense, but it's evident to me that they've become grounded in their own cycles, and when you venture out musically to that sort of territory, it becomes very obvious when you get stuck there.
