First off, you can learn everything you need to know about this site in the
FAQ's. And if you haven't yet read any of the stories, you should probably start off with Chapter 1, The Wal-Mart Story. It's not MY favorite, but it is the most popular story on this site.

So, I used to have this little window that popped up to tell everyone what Mentally Incontinent is. But, just like any project that involves everyone who happens upon it, things change and adapt and metamorphize. So, I figured, the best way to tell new users what Mentally Incontinent is, is to let the people who are part of it to explain. It's a website that is going to be a book where the readers vote on the chapters. That's cool and all, but there's a lot more going on here than just that.

So, everyone, what is your perception of Mentally Incontinent?

I know it's kind of an odd, open-ended question, but that's because it's supposed to be. I'd like to know how you guys perceive the site - as a community, as a project, as a concept and of course, as a website.

Any answer is acceptable. I don't suppose there can be a wrong answer for this question. Also, if you have what would be considered a "Negative" answer to give, I especially want to hear from you.[/url]

I think it's a site for everyone to express themselves. While it's vague, I think it caters to people who are looking for a community that encourages their odd personality quirks, quirks that the general population may find offensive.

I'd say we're like a mental institution. An aptly named institution. icon_biggrin.gif

I love it here. It's so much fun! Where else can I post 6 times a day and not be despised? Where else could I possible post 250 times in the first month and a half?

Besides, the people here are fun. YAY! ^.^;; *Cough*

I like MI, it's cool and fun and whatnot.

You could do that at my place too, but I wouldn't dare post pictures there, if I was you. Way too many guys age 15-22 that need to get laid.

Its an online community. It just happens to have a book.

I think of Mentally Incontinent... as ... like a place for a whole great group of people who are more like a family than anything else, to express themselves (just like DJ said... fuck, I cant believe it, but I totally agree with him here) and are all brought together for the love of reading incredibly funny stuff. Its more than just a site... its a home away from home.

As a concept I think it's great, I hope the book sells a ton of copies, and if it doesn't sell as much as you'd like, at least you know the people that are reading it understand and appreciate it. As a community I think it's awesome. The last forum I went to was a good concept, but it didn't turn out as well. It degraded into everyone arguing with everyone, and they never banned anyone so the trolls just kept coming. After I left there I was sad, but everyone here welcomed me and now I check MI 20 times a day and respond to anything that catches my eye. Thanks for such a great place/idea Joe!

Making your way in the world today
Takes everything you've got
Taking a break from all your worries
Sure would help a lot
Wouldn't you like to get away?
All those night when you've got no lights
The check is in the mail
And your little angel
Hung the cat up by it's tail
And your third fiance didn't show

Sometimes you want to go
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
You want to be where you can see
Our troubles are all the same
You want to be where everybody knows your name

Roll out of bed, Mr. Coffee's dead
The morning's looking bright
And your shrink ran off to Europe
And didn't even write
And your husband wants to be a girl

Be glad there's one place in the world
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
You want to go where people know
People are all the same
You want to go where everybody knows your name

Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came
Where everybody knows your name
And they're always glad you came

I think that like anything new it took me a while to get used to the "quirks" and "personality traits" here. What am I saying? I still think all of you are freaks.

I think that while there are still the same elements as any other community (online or otherwise) there are some good moderators here who stifle most of the trolling and bullshit before it gets too ugly.

I think having a place where I feel comfortable enough to share something I wrote- is amazing. Being able to get the negative feedback as well as the positive feedback is what helps me improve what I do.

This place has made me laugh, it has made me cry, and it has more importantly made me think. That there is a book involved just means that I will have something worthwhile to read and share.

I am not really all up on the happy lovey theme, because there are people here that I frankly, just don't like. There are some here that I adore. Most of you, I don't really think about unless we are sharing a conversation. I don't say that to insult you- I know most of you feel the same way about me.

All in all, I think the site is a great thing- I love being able to come here and scream and laugh and cry and sing and fight.

edit: and yes- it IS good to have someplace to go to break up the porn...

I just like it here, it's comfortable for whatever age you are, and the people here are generally nice. I've recieved some great advice from the people here... It's like a family away from the people who are related to me.

I joined for the focus on creative writing and other literature related help I could find. I was kind of hoping that it would be a little more critical, but what can you expect from a site whose popularity comes initially for the entertainment value in the antics and misfortunes of a man.

I didn't know there were forums for a great while. I didn't really know what forums were actually, except that I've seen some bad ones and wasn't really impressed. I really joined so I could see the rest of the archived Mentally Incontinent Reader Stories. And even that took me too long as my initial attempts at joining were stifled by the inability to do so. After a few months it finally worked for me. Little did I know that I could have e-mailed Joe and it would have been taken care of immediately.

The forums have grown on me. I really appreciated the big schism we had about the off-topicness in Talky-talky. Although I didn't vote for In All Seriousness, I like having it, even if its dead a lot of the times. Grape-nuts was a mockery. My favorite section in the forums is Creative works. Talky-talky has its moments, but I generally don't care for those long threads because I don't have time to keep up with them. Also, there definitely exists an established group of people, both old and new, whose personalities readily shine through the massive amounts of posts they've made. Some of these polls we take for the penalty jar competitions feel like popularity contests. But I'm not complaining because they did the work, and they found support in their friends.

I don't get the logo.

Hmm, my perception of MI…

… it’s really indescribable, you know? I mean, take this website, started by this guy who seems to have the worst of luck sometimes, and center it around his stories of what happened. Simple enough in theory, right? Even though, judging by his previous luck (both in life and in his ventures), the website should’ve failed the first month it was up (sorry, Joe… icon_razz.gif ).

BUT!!!!!!!!!!

Something (perhaps that same something that has saved Joe from SERIOUS harm throughout his mishaps) not only prevented the site from failing, but has allowed it to become a wonderful, thriving website and community. (and, the fact that the stories of said mishaps are brilliantly written, also, doesn’t prevent people from sticking around… ^___^ (shush, Joe))

The community itself is… unique. Nowhere else can you talk about your love of (and/or obsession with) fire and orange tags (sometimes even in the same breath… errr, post!) and not get thought of as being absolutely mad. Just as DJ said, this place is like a mental institution - in some ways at least. People are drawn together by something, be it their common sense of (warped, at times) humour, curiosity about the madness that is the MI forums, whatever it may be, it draws most of the frequent visitors to the site back again… and again… and again. Most of the people who make themselves known on the site have a lot in common, and yet have just enough of things NOT in common to make things interesting.

Lively conversation, few TRUE flame wars (even though a few “flame wars” have been started just for fun), and a good group of people to just hang out with and chat - all this and more are the most important things about the community. You can talk about anything at all, and people won’t even blink (or, perhaps they may blink at it for whatever reason, but they will come up with an intelligent and usually quirky response). Whatever you’re experiencing in your life at the moment, whatever you’re upset or worried or depressed over or happy about or exited over or just feeling “blah” about, someone else on the site has most likely gone through what you’ve gone through (or at least very close to it), and is willing to relate or offer advice/consolation/congratulations/pointers/anything else to you. Whether you need help with a borked computer or a messy breakup, you can discuss your problems, and generally have suggestions about how to handle it soon enough.

*laughs* sorry for the "essay"... icon_razz.gif done being so serious and all for now… ^__^
