Part 10 - 5 Minutes After
"He was on the verge of knowing her deeper soul… Something held her back and she could not let go…" Luscious Jackson, Don’t Look Back
The glass door slid roughly in its track, coming to rest against the right side of the frame with a dull clacking. As the air began to warm around me, the smells of a seaside hotel room began to fill my senses; the odors of the old carpeting in the main room and the peeling linoleum of the kitchenette mixing with the weak bleach solution used to clean both earlier that afternoon.
I shed my jacket quickly and stepped out of my sand-filled sneakers. I crossed the room to the foot of the bed where Katherine sat, illuminated only barely by the small nightlight glimmering from the base of the adjacent wall only a foot in front of her. I looked into her eyes as I bent down to kiss her, noting that they closed long before my lips reached hers. Slowly we lay upon the bed huddled as one mass, kissing softly and whispering “I love you” over and over into one another’s right ear as if that were the only phrase that the different languages we spoke shared in common.
Suddenly, she broke away and buried her face into my chest. I could feel my shirt growing wet as her body spasmed uncontrollably.
“What’s wrong?” I asked with a voice filled with concern.
“It’s… It’s not…” She said through her sobbing.
“It’s not… what?” I said, hugging her tightly.
“Fair!” She yelled as she pounded hard against my chest with her right fist. “It’s not fair! It’s… Just not… Fair….”
And together, we descended with the sun into the night.

that said... what isn't fair is the fact that they live far away. that they can't be together everyday. at least, that's my guess. that's what most people struggle with in internet-based and long-distance relationships. |

Sure, this is a free website. I make no money at all from this thing, and it's my choice to put out content at my own discretion and whatnot. So, any day now, I could just pull the plug and say "Okay, that was fun, but now I'm done." But I won't - and here's why:
I've invited everyone on the internet to come and be a part of this book; to take it upon themselves to determine what stories would make a good book. I've asked everyone to get involved. To that end, I owe it to all 1994 members of this site to keep things rolling until they are done.
A lot of websites run advertisements and make money that way, keeping people coming for new content in exchange for advertising revenue. They get traffic when they put up new content. Then then parlay that traffic into advertising revenue, running ads and getting paid based on thruput. It's a swell model for those who it works for. What they are basically doing is saying to the user "hey, I'm gonna give you contnet, and the way you will pay me is by reading this ad for Viagra or this ad for a sports site that has nothing to do with sports and everything to do with fake-breasted women modeling in a too-tight shirt with my site's logo on it." And yeah, I do a tremendous amount of traffic on this site, and I've been approached by a billion people to run ads on the site. But to me, that's just a bad idea.
I'd MUCH rather change things up. No one's ever extended an invitation to the whole of the internet to become involved in the writing of a book before - at least, as far as I know, they haven't. When you ask people to become involved in something, it's not really fair to ask them to pay you for the privledge.
I am asking people to devote larger chunks of their time reading the massive three to 10 thousand word stories -- on a computer monitor, no less! Then, I have the audacity to ask you to judge these stories and compare them to other big long stories to determine which one should be in the book. Once the book is ready, I'm THEN going to ask you guys to buy copies and tell your friends to buy copies. All of this combined relies upon you being able to trust the fact that everything on this site is worth reading and visiting and clicking on. There should be NOTHING here that you can click on or read that you wouldn't want to. Everything here relates directly to the community here (forums) or the project itself.
So the bottom line of this long-winded vent is that yeah, I do owe you. Lots. Because without you, this whole project is just a bunch of 1's and 0's floating nowhere in cyberspace. After all, what is a writer without readers? You are the reason I keep writing. You are the only thing that keeps me posting content. You have faith in me to provide something you want to read (and sometimes, I even come through on that!!!) and I have faith in you to help spread the word and make this whole thing worthwhile. You've done and are doing your part - So I've got to do mine!

I really appreciate you not making this site full of ads. That's what drives a reader away. Of course I've told people about this website, I think I've showed the Wal-Mart story to all my friends. And I know that when the book eventually comes out, I will be buying it. I can even say "Hey, I've talked to this guy!" that's very cool.
Thanks for staying devoted to this site and not saying "Alright, I've had my fun..." and closing up the website. I know for me, and for many more, it's been a place where we can count on humorous and witty literature and not have to be bombarded by ads.
Thanks, Joe! |

Just a few I can think of would be: All 3 of my bosses, a couple of my coworkers that I get along with, a couple of girls in my Chemistry class when they were discussing their hatred of Wal-Mart (guess which story I pointed them to?), my girlfriend, my mother, a few of my friends (both online and offline) who are into this sort of thing, a chat list I am on with members of a game I used to play, a humor list of mostly the same audience, and probably more that I can't remember, too.
Ads are teh d3v!1! Of course, if you want to shamelessly plug my site at no charge (see above by my username) to attract members to my LARP, I wouldn't complain >:-D
Actually, ads aren't too bad IF they're non-instrusive (nuklearpower.com isn't too intrusive), but those kinds of ads don't sell very often and definitely not for a premium price. I can't stand sites with all kinds of ads flashing all over the place advertising a pill that will not only enhance your breast size, but your penis as well (newgrounds.com, for instance). And before anyone asks: YES, I have seen ads/spam email like that.
Oh, and it's 1996 members now - 2 members since you posted your message, Joe. There'll probably be more in the next few days too - can you break 2000 registered members!?!? |
